Freddy teams up with a frilly sock named Ruffles and a fuzzy knee-high named Hanks to find a way back home. Along the way, they have to deal with a group of rigid, dyed socks who want everyone to look and act exactly the same. There are currently two books available in this series, giving students a great chance to keep the momentum going once they finish the first one.
This series is suitable for students who avoid long pages of text. As a graphic novel, the story moves through dialogue bubbles and expressive action, making the plot easy to track even if a student is still mastering English. The low Lexile level means the vocabulary is accessible, but the themes of finding your identity and resisting peer pressure are perfect for middle-grade interests. One of the best parts for a classroom is how the series stays consistent. Because the art style and the main trio of friends stay the same in the second book, readers don’t have to relearn a whole new world.
