Fairest of All (Whatever After Series)

By Sarah Mlynowski Anu Chouhan
Stepping through a magic mirror turns a classic fairy tale into a hilarious race to save the story.
Sarah Mlynowski brings us Fairest of All, the first graphic novel adaptation of her popular Whatever After series. The story follows Abby and Jonah, siblings who find a magic mirror in their basement that whisks them away into the world of Snow White. They accidentally stop the princess from eating the poisoned apple, which sounds good until they realize they’ve ruined her happy ending. There are currently two books available in this graphic format, giving students a great starting point for serial reading.
This series is a fantastic find for English Language Learners or students who struggle with long blocks of text. The low Lexile makes the dialogue easy to decode, while the full-color artwork by Anu Chouhan helps readers track the plot through visual cues. Even though the reading level is manageable, the themes of gender expectations and narrative agency keep the story interesting for middle-grade students. It invites kids to think about “who gets to decide the ending,” which creates excellent openings for classroom discussions. Using recurring characters like Abby and Jonah helps lower the barrier for reluctant readers, as they grow familiar with the protagonists’ personalities and the series’ humorous vibe. This makes it much easier for them to pick up the next volume with confidence, creating real momentum in their independent reading habits.
