Player vs Player (Game Quest Series)

By Ash J Wu
Three friends trapped in a video game must stop bickering and start building defenses to survive a zombie-filled digital world.
Ash J. Wu, an author-illustrator who worked on the award-winning “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse,” kicks off the Game Quest series with Player vs Player. The story follows three best friends—Kat, Tai, and Alex—who find themselves at odds just as their school fundraiser hosts a tournament for their favorite game, Otherworld. The trio is magically pulled into the game, where they must face real zombies and construct physical defenses to stay alive. They are forced to set aside their stubbornness and cooperate to avoid a permanent “game over”. As this is the first book in the series, it introduces a world that young readers can return to as new installments are released.
This book is an excellent pick for students who find long, dense chapters intimidating or those who are still gaining confidence in English. The sentence structure is kept intentionally simple and direct, which helps maintain interest without exhausting a reader’s patience. Wu fills the pages with color spot-art and detailed diagrams of the game levels, which act as a helpful guide for those who rely on visual cues to follow the action. For students learning English, the limited use of idiomatic language prevents confusion, while the high-interest gaming theme provides a familiar context. The benefit of this being a series is that readers can become comfortable with the characters’ distinct personalities and the consistent art style, making it much easier to pick up the next book once they’ve finished the first. In a classroom setting, Kat, Tai, and Alex’s journey could be used to prompt discussions about team-building and how to resolve conflicts during group projects.
