The Adventures of Rap Kid (Series)

By MC Grammar
Meet Z, a boy who finds his voice through rhythm and rhyme in a world where every word he speaks beats to its own drum.
Jacob Mitchell, a multi-award-winning teacher and World Book Day Ambassador known as MC Grammar, created this series to promote literacy through music. In the first book, we meet Z, a young boy who suddenly finds that every line he speaks comes out as a rhyme. Along with his friend SFX, Z takes on the persona of Rap Kid to tackle lyrical challenges at school. There are currently two books in the series. These stories follow Z as he works with his teacher, Mr G, and the school librarian, Paige Turner, to compete in epic rap showdowns that test his creativity and teamwork.
This series is a great find for reluctant readers because it uses simple and compound sentence structures that flow with a rhythmic beat. The rhymed couplets maintain a steady momentum, which helps students who often find dense prose intimidating. The books include visual aids and graphic illustrations similar to the Wimpy Kid style to support the text, making it easier for visual learners to track the plot. Since the core characters and school setting remain the same across the series, readers can build their confidence as they move from the first book to the second. This consistency allows English language learners to focus on new vocabulary and wordplay rather than relearning a new cast of characters. In a classroom, these books can be used to inspire “Rap Battles of Knowledge” or to help students build self-expression and confidence in public speaking.
